CDS Picks: JHud, Avril Lavigne, Alicia + More

Welcome to another issue of CDS Music Chart's popular feature "CDS Picks". In this issue I will be bringing you my picks for what new singles I think are hot this week. Sit back, relax and enjoy the 8th installment of "CDS Picks"!

Avril Lavigne - "Hello Kitty"
Months after severing all ties to promotion concerning the release of her 4th studio album, Avril Lavigne has revived the struggling era by confirming the release of "Hello Kitty" as the album's 4th official single 6.5 months after the release of the commercial failure "Let Me Go" which featured her husband Chad Kroeger. "Let Me Go" reached as high #35 on the CDS Music Chart Hot 50 and spent 20 weeks (5 months) on the list. That was much lower than the peaks of the album's first and second official single ("Here's To Never Growing Up" reached #1, and "Rock N Roll" reached #2 for 5 weeks). "Hello Kitty" was rumored as the official follow as early as December of last year.

"Hello Kitty" has a distinct Japanese vibe and was pegged as a possible single by true Avril fans right after the release of the album in early November 2013.

Jennifer Hudson - "Walk It Out (feat. Timbaland)"
Following the September release of her previous track (and her 3rd album's first buzz single), "I Can't Describe (The Way That I Feel)", Jennifer Hudson recorded her 3rd studio set in silence until now. On April 14th, the singer announced the arrival of her new LP's official lead single, "Walk It Out (feat. Timbaland)" on digital retailers on April 29th. It was premiered later the same day on the singer's official Soundcloud page.

The brassy and sassy new single features vocals and production from Timbaland, a producer who peaked in popularity back in the 2007-2008 season. With that being said, the track is smooth and is more entertaining than her other recent releases, easily it is one of her best singles in her history. Jennifer's still untitled new project is expected to reach retailers in "mid summer". That likely means July or early August of this year, but the date is still unknown.

Charli XCX - "Boom Clap"
Coming off her stint on Iggy Azalea's newest single "Fancy", Charli XCX has seen waves of success around the world particularly in the United States and in the UK (where "Fancy" reached as high as #5). This time, she's getting ready to promote "Boom Clap", the first single lifted from the soundtrack of "The Fault In Our Stars". "The Fault In Our Stars", which will see release on June 6th in over 3,000 theaters nationwide, is a romantic comedy centered on a cancer patient. It is based on the 2012 best selling book of the same name.

The song itself is very simple, sweet and packs a tasty, powerful punch. It has a softer pop vibe with deep highlighted sections, like a calmer version of her most pop oriented tracks from her album True Romance. It should chart well in selective territories. Meanwhile it should fall just short of the Hot 50 this week on CDS Music. I am expecting an opening between #10-25 on the extension chart of the CDS Music Chart Hot 50, which translates #60-75 on the overall combination list.

Alicia Keys - "It's On Again (feat. Kendrick Lamar)"
So yes I normally end up cheating every time I do one of these. "It's On Again" isn't new this week (or last week for that matter), but I have started to realize how much I like this collaboration track. I initially dismissed it upon its release back at the end of March, but it has grown on me and I now see that it clearly has some potential. Produced by Pharrell Williams, "It's On Again" is a huge hit waiting for the right moment to explode. Coincidentally, I was a huge fan of Alicia and Pharrell's collaboration on the latter's most recent studio album.

Further burning the flame, is the release of the track's official music video clip. It featured scenes with Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell Williams mixed with scenes from upcoming sequel to the hit movie "The Amazing Spider Man".  That movie will see release in about two weeks (May 2nd). "It's On Again" features as the action superhero movie's main theme and will be released as part of the official movie soundtrack this Tuesday

Come back for the chart highlights and for the next installment in the "CDS Picks" series.
